The Problem
of Mathematics Teaching
Monday, 25th February, 2013 at D02.105. My class, Mathematics Education
2012 meets for the third time with Mr. Marsigit. Today, he explains about the
problem of mathematics teaching. First, he explains in detail about traditional
method of teaching and learning of mathematics. In this method, the teacher
doesn’t believe with his student, so he still to have an obligation on his
student to deliver knowledge to his student. It is done use delivery method or
transfer of knowledge. And in this method, the student perceived as an empty vessel.
Moreover, the characteristic of this method is student learn passively, bored,
and sleepy.
There are many characteristics that appear and there are many
characteristics that different. That’s why Mr. Marsigit completes his lecture
by doing online, by reflect his article. He able to facilitate us uses various
methods, various resources, and various tools or equipments. It’s the positive side of IT or web blog to develop us.
Anywhere, anytime this is the principle, “Constructivism”. The students
are able to be perceived as seed. The seeds grow into mature trees and bear
fruit, the fruit can be useful for others. It is same as a student that his science can also be useful for
others. It can start from open our mind. In fact, it is not easy to implement
this innovative of teaching because our characteristic actually reflect our
culture. The psychology of stimulus-response does not match with the current
conditions because the condition of students that unpredictable. Not all of
knowledge comes from the teacher.
Mr. Marsigit
informs us that important to us to know, to learn about the nature of all
aspects of teaching and learning of mathematics. These include :
a.
the nature
of school mathematics,
b.
the nature
of student’s learning mathematics,
c.
the nature
of learning resources, etc.
And mainly, there are two kinds
of mathematics. It is formal mathematics and school mathematics.

School mathematics (Ebbutt and Staler, 1995)
a.
Mathematics is a search of pattern and relationship.
b.
Mathematics is a problem solving activity.
c.
Mathematics is an investigation activity.
d.
Mathematics is the means of communication.

And Mr. Marsigit also shows
us the illustration about different of mathematics, about iceberg of
mathematics.
ICEBERG OF MATHEMATICS
(Frudental : Realistic mathematics)
Formal mathematics is for university level and not for
children because mathematics is still outside children's mind. Therefore, the
teachers should not be force students to receive knowledge from him.
Thus, it can be concluded that the very fundamental
problem of mathematics education in Indonesian is student lost their intuition.
It is because an adult also lost their intuition, so there are many quarrel,
brawl, and corruption.
